Mutant Crabs Showing Up in the Gulf
BP’s massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico may be related to the eyeless shrimp, clawless crabs and other deformed animals now found in the Gulf, reported Al Jazeera. Fishers and marine biologists believe tremendous amounts of highly toxic chemicals may have had a negative effect on creatures that are constantly bathed in them, contrary to what BP asserts.
Al Jazeera quoted numerous fisherman who had pulled warped crustaceans from the waters where nearly 5 million barrels of oils spewed forth after the 2010 explosion that cost 11 mens’ lives on the BP-operated Deepwater Horizon oil rig.
“I’ve seen the brown shrimp catch drop by two-thirds, and so far the white shrimp have been wiped out,” Keath Ladner, a seafood processor in Hancock County, Mississippi told Al Jazeera. “The shrimp are immune compromised. We are finding shrimp with tumors on their heads, and are seeing this everyday.”
Tracy Kuhns and her husband Mike Roberts, commercial fishers from Barataria, Louisiana, found eyeless shrimp and: “We are also finding eyeless crabs, crabs with their shells soft instead of hard, full grown crabs that are one-fifth their normal size, clawless crabs, and crabs with shells that don’t have their usual spikes … they look like they’ve been burned off by chemicals.”
“We also seeing eyeless fish, and fish lacking even eye-sockets, and fish with lesions, fish without covers over their gills, and others with large pink masses hanging off their eyes and gills,” Darla Rooks, a lifelong fisherperson from Port Sulfur, Louisiana said.

Toby Ng - The World of 100

Have you ever asked yourself, what would the World look like as a small community of 100 people? Probably not. However, it is something to think about, as the reality would be startling - as much as you’d think so, the village would only have 7 computers, and only 1 person in the World Village would be educated at University level.

These facts are something that designer Toby Ng has thought about very carefully, and turned the results of his findings into a series of twenty infographics depicting ‘The World of 100’. Although aesthetically beautiful, with sharp lines and bold, vibrant colours, these infographics are often horrifying.

The posters look as though they have come straight out of a children’s book; is this to mirror the naivety of those that are most likely to be looking at them on their computers?

“Look, this is the World we are living in.”

- Toby Ng

After Tuesday’s highly anticipated vote on whether to vote for a boycott on Israeli products, it looks like the Park Slope Food Co-op will not be claiming a stake in the Middle East conflict after all. With 1,005 votes against the motion and 653 for it, the eco-minded, plastic-bag shunning folks of Park Slope will still be able to purchase the handful of Israeli-made items stocked in their members-only store, including vegan marshmallows and organic paprika. But then, this vote was never really about achieving any change in Israel and Palestine. Instead, it was about cementing the desirable, brownstone-lined neighborhood’s self-styled image as a bastion of moral superiority.
Even the most impassioned boycottista would have to acknowledge that clearing a Brooklyn store’s shelves of a few items would be a symbolic act and would hardly put a dent in Israel’s economy or sway its leaders to sign a peace agreement. But, the boycottistas suggest, even if banishing Israeli marshmallows from West Brooklyn will not shake things up in the West Bank, the important thing is that the co-op could make a collective statement against Israel’s occupation of the Palestinian territories. In fact, boycott supporters were primarily making a statement about themselves. Because, these days, being Against Israel and Caring About Palestine have become moral markers in some Western circles. In places like Park Slope, boycotting Israeli products is now a lifestyle choice, much like using canvas bags and shunning plastic, eating organic and avoiding “junk” foods, or recycling instead of just throwing away your trash.

Not only are their spending habits as a non profit horrible (Mainly cause the organization has so far only been successful as sending rich white kids to Africa)

http://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=search.summary&orgid=12429

But If you watch their first documentary, its basically a bunch of privileged kids running into Africa to try and “Save” Africans.

http://www.wrongingrights.com/2009/03/worst-idea-ever.html

Which putting aside the orientalism and blatant racism aside, the problem with that is they have NO CLUE what they are doing. The end up using American sympathy to pressure the Ugandan government to try and meet with Kony to work out a truce, he agrees, and they celebrate as saviors of Africa. The Ugandan government would not have done that had a bunch of white kids caused such a ruckuses, Kony ended up using the cease fire as a way to build up more troops, and shift his military, resulting in the rape, killing, and kidnapping of thousands of people. Their second move was to pressure the OBama admin to send troops there… which derailed a second peace process and resulted once again in the killing and raping of hundreds of people in retaliation.

Hmm, not sure how I feel about this. All organizations had similar problems including World Vision and Free The Children but are now very supported organizations and research shows both actually make change.

MiniMotives: Codes? Parking Your Tiny House

macystinyhouse:

It seems that a lot of people are saddened and I have read several responses to Jonathan’s predicament, so I thought I’d write one of my own…

Over the last few months I have gotten to know Jonathan fairly well. He has recently ran into some complications with his awesome tiny house. I expect…
